Take Route 2 north-west through Pawcatuck and North Stonington, then Route 164 north through Preston, and Route 12 into Canterbury. OSRM puts it at about 24 miles and roughly 38 minutes. It's all two-lane country road, a relaxed first tow.

A town on both sides of the river

Westerly and Pawcatuck share a downtown but sit in different states, and that matters for paperwork:
